Fans of HBO’s “True Detective” know that Detective Rust Cohle (played by Matthew McConaughey) has developed many a philosophical musing about life, from “I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution” to “all your life—you know, all your love, all your hate, all your memory, all your pain—it was all . . . a dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams there’s a monster at the end of it.”
He’s not the type to sugarcoat.
So it was pretty much a stroke of genius for the creators of this clip to combine the heady nature of his ruminations with the saccharine cuteness of AT&T commercials that spitball ideas with a panel of kids. Rust's message incidentally provides a robust devil’s advocate position to the inspirational messages typically pitched to children; they're a kind of depressing cerebral antidote to Dr. Seuss’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go. Sorry kiddies, but here’s a heaping dose of convoluted cynicism.
